In handicap shogi games, a different naming convention for players is used:
Uwate (上手 uwate) - the player who is giving the handicap; playing with a certain disadvantage. In notation described with ☖ symbol (or ⛉ on diagrams).
Shitate (下手 shitate) - the player who is receiving the handicap; playing with a certain advantage. In notation described with ☗ symbol (or ⛊ on reversed diagrams).
It is a rule that in exchange for giving the handicap, it is uwate who is making the first move. On shogi diagrams they still will be shown with ⛉ diagram with pieces on top of the board (reversed).
